Striving for a road to recovery, 1959
She spent most of her remaining years fighting off encroaching paralysis
with relentless physical therapy (including solitary walks) and
indefatigable optimism but after a fall in her home which required
hospitalization and immobility, the disease found its chance. Margaret
Bourke-White died on August 27, 1971. She was 67. (Photograph by Alfred
