Striving for a road to recovery, 1959
She spent most of her remaining years fighting off encroaching paralysis with relentless physical therapy (including solitary walks) and indefatigable optimism but after a fall in her home which required hospitalization and immobility, the disease found its chance. Margaret Bourke-White died on August 27, 1971. She was 67. (Photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt.)
